Kaliluni Medical Centre Construction Project
Kaliluni is a remote, agricultural village nestled in Kenya's steep Iveti Hills. More than 22,000 people, most living on less than $1.50 per day, reside in the area. If you are sick or injured or someone dies, the nearest services are more than 20 km (12 miles) away in Machakos. To get there, people must descend (mostly on foot) nearly 5,000 feet down steep, dirt roads that become quagmires when it rains. After treatment, they make the same journey back home, only this time it's uphill. Imagine carrying a sick person to and from treatment (or home again for burial) under these conditions. |

A grant from Lift Up Africa supported construction of the Kaliluni Medical Centre (KMC), a complex that includes a hospital, visiting doctor/nurse quarters and a funeral home. And on Monday, May 10, 2010 KMC opened its doors to begin providing outpatient services for the community.
Starting with a staff of three--a nurse, patient attendant, and cleaning person--the clinic served more than 100 people on day one. "The first three days after opening the nurse was so busy that he was unable to see all the patients who came to the clinic," reports Sam Muinde, LUA Vice President and KMC Board Chair. "Therefore, we found it necessary to hire a community nurse as an addition to the staff." |

| The Clinic opens from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. "I have nothing but success stories to report....The head nurse, David M. Nzuki, has had to make home visits to treat patients who have been so sick they can't make it to the clinic, which is not even far from their homes. I was amazed when on the first day we opened, I found two women in the toilet area singing and praising God for the opening of the KMC hospital." |
